SIGNOL makes an Impact On-line

Clydebank College recently gained funding from the European Commission e-learning Initiative to evaluate and develop e-learning models under a project called SIGNOL (Special Interest Group for Networks On-Line)

SIGNOL is a public private partnership between Clydebank College Scotland, Hjalmar Stromerskolan in Sweden and Skilllion Ltd in Finland. The project researched the “impact e-learning has on learning Institutions implementing and delivering e-learning” and developed e-learning models to enable institutions to attract, maintain and sustain "e-active students".

Target groups included Senior Managers who provide strategic support to learning Institutions and Lecturers who teach within e-learning environments.

SIGNOL partners recognise that institutions will have more chance of succeeding in the move to on-line teaching and learning if there is a shared vision of how e-learning should develop within their own organisation, underpinned by key decision makers to implementing it. This will involve significant organisational and cultural change, and requires management action at several levels to put in place new structures, policies and processes that addresses staff roles, workloads, and infrastructures. SIGNOL e-models will address these areas and support institutions in Transforming their teaching practice through e-learning.

Thomas McCusker project manager for SIGNOL highlights "In the future learning Institutes will consist of two parts the physical and the virtual. Traditionally it was the institutions physical assets, which determined its success. However in the future more and more learning hours delivered over the Internet will increase the values of its virtual assets. These assets consisting of virtual learning environments, e-learners and learning objects will become a dominant feature in its economy."
